What Is the Best Tooth Replacement Options for Seniors?
Posted on 9/16/2024 by Alexandra Garcia DDS MS
As most people age, they develop various dental issues. The need to replace teeth may arise over time and is one of the reasons why seniors tend to replace teeth more. Interestingly, the elderly are not suitable for all teeth replacements. There are a few prosthodontic treatments that are highly recommended for the elderly, and the three main types of replacements are outlined below.
Dental Bridges
Dental bridges are one of the best treatment options for geriatric patients. A bridge is used like a unique puzzle piece that fits into the gap between your teeth. It is attached to the teeth on either side of the gap using unique crowns. This way, your teeth are stable, and you can chew and talk usually. Bridges are mainly used by those who have lost a single tooth or those with considerable gaps in their teeth.
On the downside, bridges have to alter the teeth on either side of the gap, which can make them weaker. Also, bridges do not help keep your jawbone healthy, so you might lose some bone mass there over time.
Dental Dentures for Lost Teeth
Dentures are among the most common teeth replacements for the elderly. Dentures are simply removable fake teeth on top of your gum line. You can take them out and put them back in whenever you want. But dentures do not help keep your jawbone healthy, and they can be tricky to eat and talk with.
Dental Implants for Seniors
Dental implants are the best option for seniors seeking to replace several teeth. Implants are artificial posts that are put in your jawbone on which artificial teeth are attached. Implants are as strong as natural teeth and can last a lifetime. They are also vital for keeping your jawbone healthy so you do not lose bone over time.
