Reasons There Are Different Types of Dental Crowns

Reasons There Are Different Types of Dental CrownsWhen it comes to dental crowns, you have a choice between a few types. If you are considering a crown, you will want to know the different choices, as well as the pros and cons of each.

Types of Dental Crowns

There are basically four types of dental crowns. The type you will choose will depend on what you are looking for in your crown.

The first type is a ceramic or porcelain crown. This is usually used on the incisors or other teeth that are highly visible. It tends to mimic the appearance of your natural teeth. While it should last a long time, it is the least durable type of crown.

The second type is a ceramic or porcelain top fused to a metal structure. This can also closely mimic the appearance of your teeth; however, due to the metal base, it is slightly more durable than the first type.
The third type of crown is a crown made of a gold alloy. This is highly durable and will not cause wear on the opposing teeth. However, it is highly visible, and is rarely used for teeth towards the front of the mouth.

The last type of crown is a crown made up of a base metal alloy. In creating this crown, non-noble metals are mixed together. This crown is also highly visible, and highly durable. Of the four types of crown, this one is the least invasive in installation, because it does not require the removal of as much of your tooth as the others do.

Choosing the Best Crown

The choice of which crown you want to use will be determined by a number of factors. If you care about appearance, you won't want a metal crown on your incisors. After considering your needs and situation, you should choose the crown that most closely fits your circumstance. Making an educated decision will help ensure you are happy with your new crown.
