|Typically, dental crowns last 5 – 15 years. The precise amount of time is determined by how well they're made and how well you take care of them. If you want your crown to last for as long as possible, there are certain things that you should and should not do along the way.
Mainly the goal is to not put pressure on your crown as this will shorten its lifespan. At the same time, you must also keep the tooth underneath the crows both strong and healthy so we don't have to prematurely remove your crown to care for the tooth.
How to Make Your Crown Last
To make your crown last you must practice good oral hygiene. This means brushing your teeth twice daily and making sure that at least one of those times you also floss. As you do so, make sure you pay close attention to where the bottom edge of your crown meets your gum line.
You should also visit our dental office twice a year for a cleaning and exam. This allows us to remove the plaque and tartar that are hard for you to reach. We can also assess your crown's health, as well as that of your underlying tooth. If we notice any signs of decay, we can recommend treatment early on.It's also important for you not to bite down on hard objects and let us know if you grind your teeth. We may be able to use a device like a retainer to protect your teeth from too much wear and tear.
Additionally, you should never bite your nails or use your teeth as tools – such as opening envelopes and packages with them. With the right care, we can help your crown last for 25 – 30 years. At the very least, we can ensure that it'll last for 5 years so that your insurance will cover the cost of a new one. However, you do need to call us and ask for our help in this maintenance. We look forward to being part of your oral healthcare team and seeing you at your next dental appointment in our office.
