Medication Malfunction
After undergoing the process of getting a dental implant, the last thing that you want to have happen is for your implant to heal improperly; while successful implantation primarily depends on the health of your jaw bone, it has been shown that there are several medications that can cause your dental implant to fail, which necessitates reattaching the post to your jaw bone.
While dental implant success occurs in more than 90% of patients, selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) have been shown make the process six times more likely to fail; these are a common class of drugs that are used in antidepressants, such as Zoloft and Prozac, and can cause bone loss that directly interferes with the ability of an implant to bond to the bone.
Antibiotics, such as fluoroquinolones, can also lead to bone healing and growth issues; it is better to avoid these if possible, with norfloxacin and levofloxacin being a couple of the brand names. Some proton pump inhibitors (PPIs), used primarily for stomach acid reduction, have been linked to implant rejection. Osteoporosis drugs, such as bisphosphonates, have also been linked to improper healing of bone and a higher risk of implant failure. Finally, but not all-inclusively, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), which are ubiquitously found in pain medications, may also impair bone healing and increase the probability of implant failure.
