Those patients who have suffered extensive tooth loss whether through neglecting their oral hygiene and not practicing good oral care or through disease or trauma have a lot to deal with. They are faced with coming to grips with tooth loss and with coming to decision in regard to the treatment plan.
One of the most frequently chosen solutions is also one of the most reasonably priced. That is traditional dentures. These are placed on the gums of the patient and need no additional appliance or procedure to be successfully placed in the patient's mouth.
Some of the common aspects of dentures are widely known by many patients. There is the constant fear that while eating or speaking with friends the dentures can slip out of place and cause an embarrassing situation. This can also cause injury to either the gums or other soft tissues of the mouth as well.
Due to dentures being more porous than the tooth enamel of natural teeth, they tend to get stained over time. This is especially true if the patient is a coffee or tea drinker or smokes.
When dentures are first place, many times they have to be altered several times before getting them to fit. This can cause irritation due to rubbing the soft tissues of the gum or the interior lining of the cheek.
Traditional dentures are held in place by an adhesive and patients have to have a tube of it with them wherever they go. It can be messy and usually needs to be applied multiple times throughout the day.
Dentures are not a permanent solution. In some cases, dentures need to be replaced as frequently as every three years. The American Dental Association recommends not waiting any longer than 5 years to replace them. This is because they can begin to break down and wear out.
At our offices, we can help get you set up with a set of dentures as your treatment plan. After your consultation, we will be able to get you fitted and provide functionality back to your mouth.
