Symptoms You May Notice if Your Dentures No Longer Fit Properly

Posted on 6/7/2021 by Alexandra Garcia DDS MS
Symptoms You May Notice if Your Dentures No Longer Fit ProperlyGenerally, dentures should restore your confidence after losing teeth by enabling you to smile and chew food with ease. As a denture wearer, you will equally need to care for your dentures to enjoy these benefits for their predicted lifespan. Denture fit is among the issues you will have to deal with as a denture wearer. Your dentures should fit well to prevent embarrassment, gum soreness, and infections. Ill-fitting dentures will display symptoms including discomfort, difficulty in chewing, disoriented speech, and moving dentures.

Discomfort

If you have perfect-fitting dentures, you should not feel any discomfort. Therefore, if you experience uneven pressure, pain, or soreness, it could indicate poorly fitting dentures. In such a case, a denture realignment or adjustment may be ideal. However, if this does not work, then you will need to replace your dentures.

Difficulty in Chewing and Speech

When you wear new dentures, it is normal to experience difficulty when chewing and talking, as you will slowly adjust to using them. However, this should last for a short while, after which you should be able to eat and speak well. If you experience difficulty in speech and chewing from previously comfortable dentures, it could indicate a fitting problem that requires adjustment. Ill-fitting dentures will also produce a clicking sound when you eat. This sound usually signals that your dentures are not meeting properly when you bite.

Moving Dentures

After years of wearing dentures, your jaw bone structure will lose its density, affecting the denture fit. Therefore, if your previously fitting dentures start moving around in your mouth when you speak or chew food, you may need to reline or replace them if they are old. Given the above symptoms of ill-fitting dentures, you should schedule an appointment with us when you experience any of the symptoms. For more details on denture fit, contact our office today.
