Top Three Reasons You May Notice Denture Pain

Posted on 11/8/2021 by Alexandra Garcia DDS MS
Top Three Reasons You May Notice Denture PainDentures are dental appliances used to replace missing teeth. After losing a tooth due to injury or health reasons, dentures will help restore your smile. However, dentures come with a few challenges. During the first few weeks of wearing them, you might experience some discomfort. Here are the top three reasons you may notice denture pain.

Improper Fitting

When the dentures are not fitting correctly, you will experience denture pain. Typically, dentures have a base made of resin that rests on your gum line. The gum line has very sensitive tissues, and if the dentures aren't fitting correctly, it will rub on them when you speak or eat. As a result, you will experience discomfort that can get worse if not fixed. If you have misfitting dentures, come to our offices for realignment. Our professionals will fix them in the correct position and prevent future loosening.

Bacteria

If you don't take proper care of your dentures, bacteria will build upon them and lead to the formation of yeast. The presence of yeast on dentures will cause sores that can be very uncomfortable. Unlike the bacteria on natural teeth that build up to form plaque, the bacteria on dentures build up to form yeast that poses a greater risk to your oral health. This is why you should regularly brush and floss your teeth. It is recommended that you brush your teeth at least twice a day and floss them at least once daily. This will go a long way in keeping your dentures clean.

Chewing on Hard Foods

When you chew on hard food, you are more likely to experience denture pain. The act of biting on hard foods like ice exerts a lot of pressure on your gums that causes pain. Visit our offices for more information on the causes of denture pain and how to prevent them.
