A sinus lift, which is commonly referred to as sinus augmentation, is a procedure that makes way for easy placement of dental implants. This is a treatment option recommended when one desires dental implants but does not have enough jawbone to support them. The sinus lift procedure adds more bone to the spaces between premolars and molars. The sinus membrane is pushed upwards or lifted to create space for more bone. The sinus lift surgery can only be performed by an oral maxillofacial surgeon or periodontist.
Am I fit for sinus lift?
A fit candidate for a sinus lift is that who got less bone volume in the upper jaw. It is clear that without augmentation the jaw will not be able to support the implants. After tooth loss, one can experience bone loss and this makes it hard for a dentist to place dental implants. Sinus lift surgery is used to correct the deficiency of low bone density, bone added is got from other parts of the body or even from a donor.
Sinus Lift Procedure
During a sinus lift surgery, there are several things you can expect. The oral maxillofacial surgeon will cut the gum tissue. The cut tissue is lifted and the bone below it is exposed. The surgeon carves a tiny circle into the bone, to get space for inserting a bone component into the sinus cavity, the bone transplant is used to block the gap, and the incision is done. The gap created allows the added bone to intergrade with the old bone. After this procedure healing begins and later about 4-12 weeks you can have your dental implants placed The time to have your implants is determined by the amount of bone you have added.
