When Do You Need to Replace an Old Set of Dentures?

Posted on 8/8/2022 by Alexandra Garcia DDS MS
When Do You Need to Replace an Old Set of Dentures?Dentures are a reliable set of oral appliances used to replace missing teeth. They help restore your smile and improve your mouth functionality. Besides, they help restore your upper arch, lower arch, or both. After suffering severe oral conditions like tooth decay or periodontitis, dentures will help restore the shape of your mouth by replacing missing teeth.

Even though these oral appliances are reliable and overly helpful, they cannot last forever. This means you have to replace them after a short period. Knowing when to replace old dentures is important because using then for far too long can lead to infections. There are several signs that show you need to replace your dentures. Some of them include:

They Fall Out Regularly or Feel Loose

When dentures are functioning as expected, they stay in position whether you laugh or speak. They have a tight fit between them and the gums, creating a solid bond that prevents them from falling out. However, when dentures become loose, they will easily fall out especially when you eat or speak. This is a sign that you should get a new set of dentures. Try adjusting them and see whether the problem is fixed. If it persists, schedule an appointment with us for denture replacement.

They are Uncomfortable

When dentures are in good shape and fit properly, you won't feel any pain or discomfort. However, if you start noticing signs of pain when wearing dentures, it is time to replace them. Old dentures often cause pain when you bite or chew food. All these signs show that it is time to replace your old dentures. You are warned against using dentures for far too long because they will cause infections. They also make it extremely difficult to maintain and clean.
