Who Can Benefit from CEREC Crowns?
Crowns are dental prosthetic caps that go over a tooth or implant. Typically, they are composed of a variety of different materials, but CEREC crowns are made exclusively from ceramic. Dental crowns are intended to restore a damaged tooth to fulfill its original function and to be more cosmetically appealing than the damaged tooth. Both regular and CEREC crowns will be entirely custom fit, but there is one notable key difference between the two. That difference is that CEREC crowns are done and applied all on the same day.
CEREC stands for “chairside economical restoration of esthetic ceramics.” These crowns are made entirely of ceramic, and they are created using computer-aided design and manufacturing (CAD/CAM). The key advantage of CEREC crowns is that they provide a precise, quick, and durable solution to a fractured or damaged tooth in need of repair.
How Does CEREC Work?
The initial steps for a CEREC crown will be very similar to that of a traditional crown. First and foremost, cavities or other infections of the tooth will have to be addressed prior to crown placement. Once the cavities and infections have successfully been removed, the tooth can be worn down, better known as the abutment tooth. For fractured teeth that do not have an infection, they are simply worn down into a smaller abutment.
Because CEREC uses computer-aided design and manufacturing, scans and models of the inside of the mouth must be created so as to ensure an ideal crown fit. Since CEREC is done on the same day, rather than waiting for a crown to arrive, the dental crown is made on location. The entire process is like a 3D printer. The difference with a CEREC crown is that it uses a block of ceramic, which is then milled to its ideal shape. Once milled, the tooth is applied to the abutment tooth and the process is complete.
