Multiple Teeth Implants
Houston, TX

Diagram of dental implant with post from Alexandra Garcia, DDS, MS in Houston, TXHypodontia is a rare genetic disorder in which 1 to 5 permanent teeth fail to erupt. The development of teeth stops in its early stages. As a result, the patient has several missing teeth. Anodontia is rarer than hypodontia. It is a condition in which all of the permanent teeth are missing. Patients with hypodontia or anodontia face several difficulties in their life. They are unable to speak clearly, eat properly, and become very conscious about their smile.

Accidents in which a patient suffers severe facial trauma can also result in the loss of multiple teeth. And with old age, people’s health can deteriorate and lead to tooth loss.

All of the above conditions will make multiple teeth implants a viable option to replace missing teeth.
Here is what you need to know about multiple dental implants:

Who is a Candidate for Implants?

An ideal candidate for multiple dental implants is someone who has several missing teeth but does not want to wear dental bridges, crowns, or dentures.

The person should be in good health and have a healthy jaw bone to hold the implants in place. The person should be a non-smoker and otherwise have healthy gums and teeth.

Dental Implant Materials

Multiple dental implants are made from stainless steel. The metal screws or cylinders are drilled inside your jawbone and act as artificial roots for your new teeth. A small metal extension is attached over these screws to hold your replacement teeth in place. These metallic grips are known as abutments. The replacement teeth are usually made from porcelain or ceramic to match the color, texture, and shape of your existing teeth.

Dental Implant Placement

Multiple dental implant surgeries can stretch up to months. First, the metal implants will be drilled inside your jawbones. Your periodontist will ask you to wait for 2 to 6 months to allow time for osseointegration. Osseointegration is a natural process in which the metal implants fuse completely with the jawbone and work just like the natural roots of our teeth. Osseointegration provides a firm foundation for your replacement teeth.

After osseointegration has taken place, your dentist will attach the abutments on the metal screws and fix implant supported dentures on top of it.

For patients who have fractured jawbones, a periodontist will first treat the fracture through a reconstructive surgical procedure known as bone grafting. During bone grafting, a small piece of bone tissue from other parts of your body will be taken and merged with your jawbone to fix the fracture. This will strengthen your jawbone and prepare the area for multiple dental implants.

Dental Implant Care

Unlike dentures, dental bridges, and crowns, multiple dental implants do not require additional care. They look, feel and work just like your natural teeth. Multiple dental implants are irremovable as they are completely grounded into your jawbone. They cannot fall out while you are eating, brushing, or sleeping. You can go about your daily life without the need for frequent dental visits, adjustments, and replacements.

Benefits of Implants

The benefits of multiple dental implants are as follows:
•  Permanent solution for tooth loss
•  Do not result in facial deformation
•  Look, feel, and work just like your real teeth
•  Align the adjacent teeth in place
•  Do not require special care
•  Cannot slip or fall out
•  Protection from dental cavities
•  Improves your smile
