Dentures can give you back your smile, but with dentures, you will start to lose bone in your jaw, which means that they will not fit properly after a while.

What if there was another solution? There are other ways to replace teeth that might not lead to bone loss. Here at Alexandra Garcia, DDS, MS we would love to tell you about those options. One that you may not have heard of is overdentures.

Overdentures Are an Alternative to Traditional Dentures


Many people have not heard of overdentures, but the word about them is starting to get out. They are an alternative to traditional dentures and fixed bridges.

With overdentures, we will start the same way that we will start if you are receiving dental implants. If you need teeth removed, that will be the first thing that we will need to do. After that, we will check to see how much bone you have in your jaw. It is important to have enough bone to proceed. If you do not have enough bone, we will do a bone graft. This could take several weeks.

After the bone graft, we will place titanium screws in your jaw. This is the same thing that we do for dental implants. Once the screws have set, we will add the overdenture. The difference between an overdenture and a fixed bridge is that the overdenture is removable, while a fixed bridge is not.

One of the main advantages of an overdenture over a traditional denture is that an overdenture will cut back on the amount of bone loss. The screws in your jaw will act the same way that the roots of your teeth used to act, so that will cut down on the amount of bone that you could lose.

Another advantage of overdentures is comfort. Since you will not have the problem with bone loss, the shape of your jaw will not change. This means that your overdentures will continue to fit properly.

Your overdentures will look like natural teeth. You will be able to eat the way that you did when you were younger.

One thing that you need to remember is that your overdentures will need to be kept wet if you take them out. That means that you will need to soak them, just like you have to do for traditional dentures.
